digging (spring)

In the last week of my residency I was lucky enough to be invited to dig clay on a neighbours property. In what seems like the perfect ending to my residency, this is the beginning of an amazing project which will keep me connected to this area into the future.

one week left

I'm nearly at the end of the residency period. I have one week left.

For the last three weeks, I've been going on walks to different parts of the river, and collecting water. I carry an etching plate in my backpack each time, and scratch a line in it when I get back. The etching plate rubs against the jars, my back, and just generally picks up marks, scratches and the history of this whole process. When I get back, I throw a collection of vessels from porcelain and the collected water.

Tomorrow I'll throw the final vessels from collection number eight.

sake

Today I started using the koji I carried home from Japan. I learnt the homemade sake recipe from Watanabe-san, in Shizuoka, and the miso making method is of course from my mate Hitoshi-san, of Gomishoyu fame.

Marking a path

The 2-day bookmaking workshop with Learning and Living Panton Hill was really lovely. Thanks to all the participants.

making a studio

I've been collecting water, and setting up the studio.
The colour of the water, and debris of sticks and dirt is changing the white stoneware, embedding it with this place.

residency, start.

I've begun my residency at Laughing Waters Artist in Residence (LWAIR), Eltham. I'll be here for one month, collecting water, looking at the river and taking in the surrounding space.

I woke up to this:

Gochisousamadeshita no ato /ごちそうさまでしたのあと

October 2013
Gochisousamadeshita no ato*/ごちそうさまでしたのあと。
Mitake gakkou festival
Yamanashi
Japan

A workshop where participants imprinted porcelain chopstick rests with handprints.

*The process of pressing hands together whilst saying 'gochisousamadeshita' traditionally, in Japan, marks the gratitude for food and hospitality after eating.

Participants in this workshop clasped their hands around pieces of porcelain and printed the lines of their palms into the clay, storing the process of gratitude. This coincided with a festival organised in celebration of the local community.
